standup paddleboarding
If you’re new to standup paddleboarding, there are few things you should know to have the most fun you can during the rental window.
- Gear up
- Make sure to have a safety whistle and light, better to be safe than stranded!
- Wear the right clothes. It's pretty basic if the weather is warm, a swimsuit or board shorts, a long sleeve to protect against the sun, or a short sleeve with sunblock. If it's cold, you'll want to wear a wetsuit or drysuit to protect against hypothermia.
- A leash, and no, not for your dog. The leash is what keeps you tethered to your paddleboard in case you fall off. Don't want it getting away!
- How to stand
- First, you'll want to stand alongside the paddleboard in about knee-deep water. This protects the board from being scratched on the bottom by rocks.
- Then hold the board by the edges and work your way onto it in a kneeling position just behind the center point of your board.
- From there you'll want to keep your hands on the sides of the board to help keep it balanced and move one foot at a time to get your feet where your knees were.
- Lastly, you'll want to stand in one single motion. Raise your chest while keeping your knees bent and then extend your legs to stand once your chest is vertical.
- Keep the balance
- There are a few things you can do to help keep your balance on the paddleboard.
- Keep your feet parallel, about hip-width apart, and centered between the edges of the board.
- Keep your toes forward and knees slightly bent while keeping your back straight
- Keep your head and shoulders steady and upright, you can shift your weight by moving your hips.
- Do your best to avoid staring at your feet.
