What are Efoil Boards?
First off, let’s explain what an Efoil is. Essentially, it’s an electric-powered board that’s equipped with a mast and a wing. Think of a single-person sailboat, but sup’d up. The board lifts up from the water after a certain speed is made which gives the rider a levitating feel. Unlike the old school foil boards, the Efoil doesn’t get its power from the waves to be lifted above the water but has a battery and propeller.
Efoil boards are a great solution for the wetsuit crowd that gets frustrated on flat waters. No need to wait for nature to give you your lift, just go with Efoil boards instead.
The Efoil Board Parts
Some people get a bit curious about the mechanics of an Efoil since it’s an electrified version of traditional hydrofoils, and that maybe there is a higher barrier to entry to ride an Efoil board. Luckily, the Efoils share almost all the same components so it’s familiar territory for those who’ve ridden the old-school type of boards before. Take a look at the parts that make up the Efoil board so you can learn a bit about how it functions, prepping you for a new way to float on the surf.
The Board
Like other water sports toys, the Efoil boards are measured in length, width, thickness, and liters. Why liters? Well, the more liters a board has, the more buoyant and stable it is. This is the same for standard surfboards, Stand Up Paddle Boards, and Efoil boards.
The Mast
Just like the old school hydrofoil board, the purpose of the mast is to hold the fuselage, wing, and stabilizer. Also, like the old school board, shorter masts are better for beginners because they don’t allow too much of a rise.
The Fuselage, Wing, and Stabilizer
Reminds you of a plane with these parts, doesn’t it? While both do give you lift, with an Efoil it’s rather different. The fuselage is the bar attached to the mast while the two wings and stabilizer are fixed to make the board more stable. The front wing helps the board lift and the rear wing is the stabilizer, which forces the board downward. The basic rule of the wings is the bigger the wing, the slower and more stable it is while also harder to turn.
The Battery and Propulsion System
Here is where it gets different than the old school board. The Efoil needs a propulsion system to push forward and is located on the bottom of the mast and is made up of a propeller. The propeller is battery powered and the battery is on the board, activated with a wireless controller.
Things to Know About Efoils
People new to the Efoil tend to have the same questions, so to help you decide if enhanced foiling is for you take a look at some of the things people ask:
The Ride Time
Since the Efoil doesn’t have to worry about water resistance, it greatly decreases the battery consumption which gives you much more riding time. The Efoil is typically an hour’s riding time.
The Weight
Anything with a battery is heavier than things without one, especially where sports are concerned. The standard weight of Efoils is around 34kg or just shy of 75lbs.
The Maximum Speed
The top speed of the Efoil is related to the weight of the rider, so when you set the speed you need to consider the weight of the Efoil and its parts on top of your weight.
